Extensively revised, the fourth edition of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine is a multi-purpose, multi-course text that emphasizes the post-injury management techniques used by certified/licensed athletic trainers and physicians in management of orthopaedic injuries. The collaboration of athletic trainers, sports medicine physicians, and physical therapists provides a balanced, in-depth review of common muskuloskeletal injuries, acute treatment, and rehabilitation as well as medical conditions that impact the entire body. In each chapter, following a description of the pathology, considerations are presented for immediate management, surgical/medical interventions, follow-up management (e.g., short-term bracing, immobilization), and factors influencing the patient’s care. 

This comprehensive guide will benefit anyone who treats orthopaedic injuries, including primary care physicians, sports physical therapists, orthopaedic surgeons, and physician assistants.

• Aside from being completely revised, the following features are also new to this edition:

  Chapter TOC – pathology headings in each chapter detail the injury that is being addressed in each section of the chapter.

  Clinical Presentation Boxes – list the characteristics of each injury, including the history, mechanism of injury, the symptoms that one would observe with the injury, the functional status of the athlete, and various tests to diagnose the pathology.

  Surgical Technique Boxes – scattered throughout each chapter, these boxes describe surgical treatment for a particular pathology and are accompanied by a figure illustrating the surgical technique.

  Clinical Technique Boxes – explain the steps for non-surgical procedures, such as taping and bracing for a particular pathology.

  Rehabilitation Timelines – take the reader through the timeline and milestones in the rehabilitation process of a specific pathology.

  Rehabilitation Section – provides an overview of various therapeutic exercises and rehabilitation techniques that apply to the pathologies in the chapter.
